The Benefits of Waterborne Paint

 

One of the big advantages to waterborne paint is that it delivers better coverage with fewer coats of paint. Typically, it would take 3-4 coats to cover a panel using solvent-based paint; however, with waterborne paint it will only take 1-2 coats.

One of the disadvantages of all solvent paints is that they emit a gas during the curing stages (the drying process). When using waterborne paint, once the paint dries and the water is out of the base-coat layers, then it is done. With solvent-based paints, the gas continues to work through the surface for some time, often 6 months or more; which means the layers (primer, sealer, base-coat, and clear-coat) are all curing together. This gassing process can give off a bumpy appearance down the road if the paint is not completely allowed to dry.
